Housing aged-out foster youth for a life of success

20 percent of foster youth will become homeless the day they age out.*

Kastles 4 Hope strives to eliminate the common challenges that aged-out foster youth face so that they can find success and independence in adulthood.

1. Lack of Support System:

One of the most significant obstacles faced by youth aging out of foster care is the absence of a stable support system. Without the guidance and support of family members, these young adults often find themselves alone in navigating the complexities of adulthood.

2. Financial Instability

Many youth aging out of foster care struggle with financial instability. Without a safety net, they may find it difficult to secure stable employment, pay for housing, or afford basic necessities such as food and healthcare.

3. Limited Education and Employment Opportunities

Disruptions in education during their time in foster care may leave youth lacking the skills and qualifications needed to access higher education or secure well-paying jobs.

4. Housing Insecurity

Finding safe and affordable housing can be a significant challenge for youth aging out of foster care. Without financial resources or support networks, they may be at risk of homelessness or exploitation.

5. Emotional and Mental Health Struggles

The trauma experienced during their time in foster care can have lasting effects on the mental and emotional well-being of these young adults. Many struggle with issues such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem, making it challenging to transition to independent living.

6. Navigating the Healthcare System

Accessing healthcare services can be daunting for youth aging out of foster care, especially if they lack health insurance or are unfamiliar with how to navigate the healthcare system. This can lead to unmet healthcare needs and exacerbate existing health issues.

7. Legal Challenges

Youth aging out of foster care may face legal challenges related to obtaining identification documents, managing legal matters from their time in foster care, or navigating the legal system.
